Fuerteventura Sailing: An Introduction

The perfect conditions for Fuerteventura sailing can be found, thanks to the clear sea and regular trade winds.  The sport is not as popular as other water sports here, probably because there aren’t too many places which offer anchorage points away from the main harbours.  However, the sailing conditions are usually perfect because of the air temperature being between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius for most of the year; the sea temperature of around 20 degrees; and a moderate to strong prevailing off shore wind.  There are sailing courses available on the island, and also the opportunity to go on sailing excursions

Fuerteventura Sailing: Basic Facts

While sailing in Fuerteventura, there’ll be the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, flying fish, porpoises, loggerhead turtles and a host of other marine life in the clear sea water.

The main sailing marinas for those who are into Fuerteventura sailing are in Corralejo, El Cotillo, Puerto del Rosario, Caleta de Fuste, Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable.  The marina in Gran Tarajal has recently been expanded and offers many berths for resident boats and yachts and for overnight stop overs.

Sailing courses on catamarans are possible at Las Playitas and Tarajalejo on the south-east coast.  A one hour taster experience, with an instructor, costs 25 euros. A 12 hour course (4 days) costs around 250 euros, and in that time you’ll be trained to sail a catamaran. There is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) approved training centre in Corralejo.

Sailing is popular with school children on the island, and they receive tuition at the Nautical schools in the main marinas, where they use small Optimist sailing dingys.  Adults also sail the traditional Canarian boats, the Vela Latinas.  There are often regattas at the weekends.

Catamaran trips are popular from the resorts of Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste.  These offer a 4 hour trip along the coast, with a meal and drinks included, and perhaps the opportunity to see dolphins or flying fish.  Sailing boat trips are also available in Corralejo and there are excursions going to Los Lobos island and to Lanzarote.

Land sailing is another sport that is available on the island, in the north on the Grandes Playas beaches and in the south on the Sotavanto beach where there are specialist centres.  A one hour course costs 35 euros and a three hour course costs 60 euros.  So if you want to experience a different form of Fuerteventura sailing that offers high speed and an adrenalin rush then this could be for you.  It is suitable for ages 8 upwards.  The instructors teach you all the basics of sailing so that you are able to make the most of the conditions.

Sailing, either on land or sea, may be for you.  You won’t find better conditions than in the perfect climate and seas of the Canary Islands. Whether you are an experienced sailor, or just a beginner, then you may find there’s an opportunity to broaden your skills under the sail of a boat on the island of Fuerteventura.
